General Employment Permit (Work Permit)

General Employment Permits are much more flexible in terms of remuneration and are considered to be the next best option for candidates who do not meet the requirements for Critical Skills Employment Permits. As a general rule a “Labour Market Needs Test” is required for a General Employment Permit. A General Employment Permit will not be granted if the post appears on the “Ineligible Occupations List”.

What do I need to apply for a General Employment Permit?

  • Posts with a minimum annual remuneration of €30,000;
  • Posts with a minimum annual remuneration of €27,000 if you have graduated from a Third Level Institute in Ireland in the previous twelve months and the post appears on the Critical Skills Occupations List;
  • Posts with a minimum annual remuneration of €27,000 if you have graduated from a Third Level Institute Overseas in the previous twelve months and the post appears on the Critical Skills Occupations List as an ICT professional;
  • Posts with a minimum annual remuneration of €27,000 which is supported by Enterprise Ireland or the IDA, requires a Non- EEA Language and requires specialist customer service, sales role or technical or language support.

General Employment Permits are granted from between six months and two years. Renewals are for periods of six months to three years. A General Employment Permit holder who has held a General Employment Permit for five years may apply for a Stamp 4.
